Uncovering of the Prince Consort's Statue at Balmoral
15 Oct 1867Albumen print | 26.3 x 34.4 cm (page dimensions) | RCIN 2160417
Photograph of the unveiling of the Prince Consort's statue at Balmoral. Queen Victoria and her children hold umbrellas in a small group below the statue. A group of gillies stand behind them. There is a crowd on the far left side of the photograph, all holding umbrella. A group of Highland guards stand to attention behind the statue, on the far right side of the photograph.
In her journal Queen Victoria recorded the unveiling, writing: 'I & the children stood just in front of the statue which was covered. ... The soldiers presented arms & the Pipes played as we gazed on the dear noble figure of my beloved one who used to be with us here in the prime of beauty, goodness & strength! Then Dr Robertson stepped forward & made a very pretty little speech in the name of the servants & tenants, thanking me for the gift of the statue, & this was followed by the soldier's firing a "fen de joie", then all cheering, & "God save the Queen" being sung. The rain ceased for a few minutes & we were photographed'
