Holy Families & Madonna and Child

FRANÇOIS DE POILLY (1623-93)

The Virgin and Child with the Infant Baptist [‘The Madonna of the Blue Diadem’]

reworked c. 1728

Engraving with etching | 41.3 x 29.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850889

A print after the so-called Madonna of the Blue Diadem, a painting generally attributed to Raphael’s workshop (possibly G.F. Penni or Giulio Romano) housed in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 603; see RCIN 850887 for a photograph of it). Lettered with attribution of the painting to Raphael. As indicated by the legend below the image, the painting was then in the collection of Victor Amédée, Prince of Carignano, Paris. This plate was initially engraved by François de Poilly (1623-93) and later reworked by Charles Simonneau (1645-1728). Published in Recueil de Crozat, 1729, I, pl.29.

Showing the Virgin lifting a veil over the sleeping Christ Child with the Infant Baptist kneeling down in adoration on the right; in a landscape.
