Three sleeping Apostles from "The Agony in the Garden"
c.1853-1876Albumen print | RCIN 850237
Two photographs reproducing the recto and verso of a drawing now in the Royal Library, Windsor (RCIN 912792) where it is attributed to the studio of Pietro Perugino (c.1500).
This drawing might be related to a lost composition of "The Agony in the Garden" by Perugino. It shares elements with four cartoon fragments by Giovanni di Pietro, known as Lo Spagna now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 410E; a photograph of these is at RCIN 850236) which are preparatory for a painting now in the National Gallery, London (inv. no. NG 1032) by Lo Spagna (c.1500-1505). This painting was traditionally thought to be by Raphael, but it has been recently attributed to Lo Spagna or a follower of Pietro Perugino. It is based on the 'Agony in the Garden', which was executed by Perugino for the church of San Giusto, Florence and now in the Uffizi, Florence. See Bibliographic References for further information.
Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-1876)
