J. DELFINI (19C)

Portrait of Pope Julius II

c.1800-1876

Engraving | 41.1 x 34.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852026

A print after one of the several existing copies of the ‘Portrait of Pope Julius II’, the original version of which was made by Raphael in c.1511 and is now in the National Gallery, London (inv. NG 27).

The composition is known through several painted and engraved copies.
Ruland (1876) followed Passavant’s opinion (1860) and regarded a painting in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence (inv.1912, no.79) as the original by Raphael. That painting is now unanimously accepted as a copy by Titian after Raphael’s original portrait now commonly identified with the painting hanging in the London National Gallery.
