Joshua renews the Covenant at Shechem

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 9.2 x 27.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853690

A photograph of a drawing now in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem (inv. no.A+ 027) catalogued as a preparatory drawing by Raphael for the almost entirely destroyed fresco 'Joshua renews the Covenant at Shechem' painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the tenth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. Not in Ruland (1876).

According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs.
