AFTER A WORK ATTRIBUTED TO GIOVANNI FRANCESCO PENNI (1496-C. 1536)

The baptism of Christ

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 15.6 x 30.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853638

A photograph of a pen and ink drawing in the British Museum (inv. no.1861.0608,150), attributed to Giovanni Francesco Penni, for the fresco 'The Baptism of Christ' painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the vault of the thirteenth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican.

Ruland (1876) catalogued this British Museum drawing as a copy after the 'original' sketch for the loggia fresco, which, following Passavant, he believed to be that held in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle (RCIN 912731; see also RCIN 853637 for a photograph of this drawing). Popham (see Bibliographic References) later recognised that the British Museum drawing was the original sketch, and that it was the Royal Collection drawing which copied that in the British Museum. Dacos (see Bibliographic References) attributes the British Museum drawing to Raffaellino del Colle.
