AFTER A WORK COPYING THE WORKSHOP OF RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

The sacrifice of Cain and Abel

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 9.5 x 19.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853654

A photograph of a drawing catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being then in the collection of the Uffizi Museum, Florence and 'probably an early copy' after the almost entirely destroyed fresco 'The sacrifice of Cain and Abel' painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the second bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican.

According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs.
