The Sea Victory at Ostia [from the Stanza dell'Incendio]
c.1836-1874Engraving | RCIN 852845
A print reproducing the fresco of 'The Victory at Ostia' painted on the east wall of the Stanza dell'Incendio in the Vatican. Lettered with artists' and printer's names below image. With coat of arms at lower centre, and head of a man at lower right (detail from the fresco). State without dedication and publishing line. Annotated in pencil on both sides. Not in Ruland (1876). Described as from Pietro de Brognoli's series of prints after Raphael's Stanze frescoes and Sistine Chapel tapestries dated 1874 (Höper 2001).
The fresco is now generally thought to have been designed by Raphael, but his direct involvement in the execution (dated c.1514-15) is subject of much debate.
